When using a Visa Gift Card or Visa Reloadable Card ...
Understanding your Reloadable (Travel, Student and/or General Purpose) and Gift Card balance is more important than ever. Both cards can be used when making purchases from any merchant that accepts Visa debit cards. However, some card issuers place authorization tolerances on transactions at particular types of merchants, such as restaurants, hotels, cruise lines, mail order, and car rentals. Authorization tolerances add a percentage or fixed dollar amount to the amount of the transaction when it is submitted for approval. Their purpose is to cover any tip/gratuity that you may add to the purchase after the approval or to ensure that adequate funds are available to cover the final purchase. For example, you have dinner at a restaurant and the total bill is $25.00. You have a $25.00 Visa Gift Card that you would like to use and this card has a 20% authorization tolerance on restaurants. If the restaurant tries to run the card for $25.00 it will be denied because 20% is added to the transaction amount and there were insufficient funds to cover $30.00 ($25.00 x 20% = $5.00 + $25.00 = $30.00)
Helpful Hints:
1. Know your balance and tell the merchant how much you want to use from the card. Most merchants don't have the ability to pull up your Visa Reloadable or Gift Card balance. If you try to use the card for more than is available then it will be denied. You can always get your balance by calling the telephone number provided with your card.
2. Know the authorization tolerances on your Visa Reloadable or Gift Card. Authorization tolerances set by card issuers are disclosed in the Terms & Conditions made available to you when you purchased your card.
3. Take authorization tolerances into account. If you are trying to use a Visa Reloadable or Gift Card at a type of merchant where an authorization tolerance is in place, you will not be able to use the entire balance of the card.
4. Try a lesser amount. In the article example, if you had the restaurant use the Visa Gift Card for $20.00 then the authorization amount would be for $24.00 ($20.00 x 20% = $4.00 + $20.00 = $24.00) and would be approved because you have $25.00 available on your card.
5. Don't forget that the entire amount of the authorization (including the additional percentage) will remain unavailable until the transaction posts (typically within three days).
6. There is usually no authorization tolerance on retail merchants so making purchases there is a good way to spend those last few dollars on your card.
